Mound Bayou Museum Announces 138th Founders Day Celebration
“Building on the Past for a More Vibrant Future”
July 10 – July 13, 2025 | Mound Bayou, Mississippi
The Mound Bayou Museum of Mississippi in partnership with the Mound Bayou Civic Club proudly
announce it’s 138th Founders Day Celebration, July 10th through July 13, 2025,
in the historic town of Mound Bayou, Mississippi.
This is a city founded by freed African Americans and long hailed as a symbol of Black self-
determination and excellence.
This year’s theme, “Building on the Past for a More Vibrant Future,” honors the legacy of city’s founders while casting a bold vision for innovation, growth, and unity in the years to come.
Founded in 1887, Mound Bayou remains one of the most historically significant African American comm
unities in the United States. The Founders Day Celebration will feature a variety of events, including:
Historical exhibits and guided museum tours
Guest lectures and panel discussions with historians, civic leaders, professors, national leaders,
and descendants of the founders
Community engagement and cultural showcases
Live music, celebrations, and youth activities
Founder’s day memorial and Church commemorative services
“This milestone isn’t just about our past—it’s a clarion call to our future,” said Darryl Johnson,
Director of the Mound Bayou Museum. This Founders Day celebration allows us to opportunity for
reflection, celebration, and renewal. We invite the world to experience the story of Mound Bayou and be
challenged to chart a brighter tomorrow.” The Mound Bayou Museum encourages with families,
